TV Series: Medium

As my regular readers already know, whenever a newspaper is shown in a film or TV programme I pause the DVD and read what is written word for word. It's often very interesting. The snapshot above is from the series "Medium", season 2 episode 15, "Sweet Child O' Mine". It shows the early edition of The Arizona Observer from March 5th 2006. The main headline is "Mayor Appoints New Deputy Mayor", and the caption on the photo is "Lynn DiNovi sworn in as Deputy Mayor". The text of the article is too small to read in the snapshot, even if you click on it to enlarge it, but on my large screen television it's legible. The newspaper was moved during the three seconds it was on the screen, so I had to step through the sequence frame by frame to read the whole article. Here is a full transcript of the article. Since there is a lot of repetition, I've printed the text that appears for the first time in bold.

Holding on to his hopes of a breakthrough before the end of the speech, the president drew a pledge from the leaders on Tuesday. Luckily he was accompanied by the famous Hollywood bodyguard. Her daring intervention saved the star's life when a crazed militia gunman burst from the crowd and opened fire at his arrival. Throwing Cliff to the ground, she leapt in front of him. An expert in the martial arts, she quickly disarmed the person, rendering him helpless.

As you can see, it makes fascinating reading. But what does it have to do with the deputy mayor? Sloppy.

  1. Whatever the original source of this text is, it's used in multiple places. I found this post while looking for it after spotting it in the 2005 film Brick. At least in that case neither of the articles that used it were the plot-relevant one, which is actually about what the headline indicates.

    1. There seem to be several standard texts that are repeated in different films and TV series. They're probably collected in a database.
